Website redesign
Comparing old and new website designs After 7 years of using the same basic layout of my website, and over 2 years of the same exact graphic design, I have done a complete redesign of my blog. While I liked the old design and thought it stood the test of time fairly well, it’s time for a change. With this new design, it will be much easier for me to maintain and improve going forward, and I think it looks much nicer. (If you’re reading this post on Facebook, why not click through to my website to see the real deal?)
Some of the new features include:
- fancy fonts using new @font-face support
- improved slideshows in my picture galleries (i.e., they should actually work now)
- improved panorama displays and links
- all kinds of pretty CSS effects (shadows, rounded corners) in modern browsers (Firefox, Safari, and Chrome)
- better organization of much content, especially including my research papers
Leave me a comment if you have any problems viewing the website. Note that if you’re using a really old browser (like Internet Explorer 6), it’s time to upgrade.

Updated site
If all has gone well, you should be seeing this blog entry on a redesigned site. I’ve updated the site to have a summer theme (as it’s apparently no longer winter). More substantially, I’ve changed the back end system that the entire web site runs on. I’ve moved the blog to a new program (WordPress). I’ve also improved the picture galleries so that they look much prettier and there’s a slideshow feature. Give it a try!
If you do discover any problems, leave a note for me here and I’ll try to fix it.

Pretty graphics
As you can see, I’ve done a redesign of the graphics on the site to have a more wintry theme. If the winter blues get you down, you can always change it back to a bright spring fling by going to + in the right hand column and changing your theme.
Photo map I’ve also done something I’ve intended to do for a long time now: put up a map that links to my picture galleries. I wrote most of the code myself, so give it a try and let me know about any bugs you find.
Life in Waterloo has returned to normal. Most importantly, FASS is over. It went well, both artistically, organizationally, and socially, but I’m very glad it’s done. Now I spend my days doing research, which is fun. Sometimes my problems have already been solved, sometimes the problem isn’t really a problem, and eventually I hope I’ll find a problem I can solve.
I’m also enjoying watching the Olympics. I’m not too dedicated this year. I didn’t even watch the Opening Ceremonies live (Cecilia might be a little disappointed) but have watched a few events here and there. Not a big fan of those Hudson Bay outfits, though: I miss Roots.
Facade of Chartres in fog I’ve also posted photos from my trip to France and Monaco in January. The photos start out in Nice, then Monaco, Paris, Chartres, and Paris again. The various fish are from aquarium in Monaco. The pictures from the Catacombs in Paris are particularly creepy, and apparently you weren’t supposed to take photos down there.

Spring theme
If all has gone well, you should now see a spring theme for my website. I decided that it was time to migrate away from the winter blues. If you notice anything wrong, please write a comment below with a description and which browser you are using so I can try to fix it.
Technical notes: Safari users get fancy glowing highlights around links. All users except Windows Internet Explorer users get a fancy background on the menu bar at right and special effects when hovering over (based on Complex Spiral).

Math on FoxTrot
I highly recommend reading today’s FoxTrot. They’re having a π-recitation contest, but with a bit of a twist.

Update: Comment Spam
I previously wrote that I had installed a program into my weblog to counteract comment spam. I’ve received a few queries about it. The program I’m using is a Movable Type plugin called MT-Blacklist. It’s a very new piece of software and seems to be frequently updated. Note that you need to be using Movable Type to use the plugin. But all the more reason to switch!

Comment Spam
I’ve been getting a few comments that are spam messages, so I’ve installed a filtering program on the comment system on the blog. If it causes you troubles, send me an email and I’ll look into it.

I Am…
Sorry for the lack of updates lately. Adam and Scott came to visit from Waterloo and we’ve been travelling quite a bit. Tonight we’re going to watch The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers, which just came out on DVD. But to keep me from record-breaking lags in blog updates, here’s a short one, forwarded to me by my friend Allison: a Molson “I Am Canadian” commercial in Flash. Cute and geeky!
