Dust storm video

Following up on yesterday’s post about dust storms: I just came across this video of a dust storm in New South Wales a couple of years ago.

Dutch product catalog

Lana sent me this link to the product catalog of a Dutch store that she used to shop at as a kid.  It’s really cute.

Expensive cellphones!

I’ve always thought mobile phones are overpriced and have made a conscious effort to find minimally-priced mobile phone plans, tending to pay-as-you-go in the last few years. But I was astounded to read the following in a recent Globe and Mail article:

Rogers added 97,000 cellphone customers on monthly contracts in the quarter, and the average bill for these customers rose $4.75 to $72.39 a month. That was more than the 85,000 additions that Genuity Capital Markets analyst Dvai Ghose expected.

$72.39 a month!?!?! Since when does anyone need to make $72.39 worth of calls in one month?

Bike trip to Elmira

Bike trip to ElmiraBike trip to Elmira On Saturday I cycled from Waterloo to Elmira via St. Jacobs to visit my friend Connie (at right) who lives in Elmira. This was the first major bike ride I’ve done in the Waterloo area, even though I once lived with some major cyclists who seemed to know every nook and cranny in the region. Connie and I bikingConnie and I biking With the help of Bikely.com, a website I recently discovered that integrates Google maps with bike routes, I plotted out a route to Elmira that avoided highways and went through the town of St. Jacobs: 22km total. We then did an 18km loop through the Woolwich Reservoir and I cycled back home, giving me a grand total of 62 km for the day. Not too bad, and I wasn’t so sore that I couldn’t bike to school the next morning, so a success, I would say!

Space gazing

Tonight I went out to gaze up at the sky, but with the goal of seeing not the stars but the International Space Station and the Space Shuttle. And at 9:40pm, the two whizzed overhead, the shuttle trailing the space station by about a minute, crossing the sky in about 4 minutes. Quite visible with the naked eye, and the sky was not that dark, still quite blue and bright. Future sightings for Waterloo and around the world are available online, with thanks to my parents for sending me the information.

Toilet seat

This will probably end up making the rounds of major newspapers as an amusing quirk from the academic world, which it is: an economic analysis of leaving the toilet seat up or down. Conclusion: both parties in the common scenario can find arguments in their favour, although the most efficient solution is to leave the toilet seat in its last used state.
