World Tour: Utheemu, Maldives
The wooden palace on Utheemu Island dates from the 1500s, a remarkable preservation given the harsh salt-water climate and occasional tsunamis. This palace was the birthplace of Sultan Mohamed Thakurufaanu, a national hero of Maldives who drove out Portuguese rulers in 1573.
