Photos from Greece

Acropolis at duskAcropolis at dusk After attending my graduation in Oxford, my parents and I flew to Greece and arrived in Athens. On our first day, we wandered around Athens at dusk. The Acropolis (left) dominates central Athens and is beautifully lit at night. At the foot of the Acropolis is the ancient Agora of Athens, which features a reconstruction of an old marketplace and the oldest standing temple in Athens. 1896 Olympic Stadium, Athens1896 Olympic Stadium, Athens Also within walking distance of the Acropolis is the stadium (right) that was built for the first Olympics of the modern age in 1896.

Entrance to the Treasury of AtreusEntrance to the Treasury of Atreus We took a number of day trips out of Athens to the nearby Peloponnese peninsula. We visited the archaeological site at Mycenae, which featured the beehive-shaped underground burial mound at the Treasury of Atreus (left), constructed in 1250 BC. Theatre at EpidaurusTheatre at Epidaurus We also went to the Theatre at Epidaurus (right) which was built in the 4th century BC and still has amazing acoustics. You can stand at the centre of the stage, drop a coin or rumple a piece of paper, and hear it clearly in the last row.

Entrance to the Olympic stadiumEntrance to the Olympic stadium We took a train out to Olympia, about 6 hours from Athens. We really enjoyed the archaeological site there because it was very easy to visualize the buildings and structures that had stood there. At left is the entrance to the stadium at ancient Olympia; athletes would have entered the tunnel and proceeded to compete.

The Tholos of DelphiThe Tholos of Delphi We took a day cruise in the Aegean sea, south of Athens, and also a day trip to the oracle at Delphi (right), perched inconveniently on the side of a mountain. Our last trip was to the Temple of Poseidon on Cape Sounion at the southern tip of the Attica peninsula (the peninsula on which Athens is located) to watch the sunset over the 2500-year old temple.

More pictures from the trip are available in my picture galleries.
