Vagina Monologues

Vagina Monologues logoVagina Monologues logo This evening I went to see a production of The Vagina Monologues in San Jose. Written by Eve Ensler and based on interviews with hundreds of women from around the world, it’s a mainstay of modern feminism.

But on to the cool part. This production had three performers (maybe others do, I’m not sure). Although I hadn’t heard of two of the performers, I was pleased to discover when I got the programme that the other was Marcia Wallace, who provides the voice of Edna Krabappel on The Simpsons. And Ms. Wallace had the privilege of performing a monologue involving 4-5 minutes of moaning and screaming and… so on. Think about that the next time you watch The Simpsons.

Wow Doug,

Not sure how you got roped into that but I’m sorry for ya. I still don’t understand the appeal of the VMs to anyone. I mean I don’t think its just a gender thing. I really don’t want to hear a bunch of people talk about their schlong’s either.

Oh well… I hope it was worth it.

Saw it too, in TO, in a theatre across from the Toronto base of the Church of Scientology: wasn’t sure which was trying harder to get attention by being ridiculous.

The high-light, in the TO performance too, was not the script, but the performers.

Sometimes, on a moonlit night, when it’s really really quiet, I listen real hard and.. no, mine still doesn’t talk to me. But if it did, it would say “Stop antropomorphising me, you idiot, and do something useful with your life!”

Seriously, though, I’ve come across some excerpts from the script, once, and they ranged from silly through pretentious & crude to.. just plain embarrassing. Was the show any better than it seems, Doug?

Joanna, welcome to my blog!

Some of the monologues seemed a little crude, but remember that they are based interviews with actual people. There were a few monologues that were quite tender and sensitive. Embarassing? I thought the point of the play was to dispel embarassment.
